It depends. On the range of poisons, how strong your sense of taste and smell is. And what sort of foods you typically use. Processed and prepared meals are dangerous, especially meals with many conflicting flavors, or too many parts.

A passing knowledge of chemistry can't hurt either.

I can teach that as well, though it's only necessary if you expect some of the rarer and more difficult to detect poisons to be used.

The easiest way to prevent something like this happening again though is to prepare your own meals from scratch. Anything with an ingredients list that consists mostly of chemicals is going to be much more at risk.

You might get called a picky eater but at least you won't be dead. [something damian knew from personal experience.]

*Danny presses his lips together, unhappily considering it. Give up all the easy foods he's been making, just for the sake of being able to taste poisons before they strike?*

*... It's either that, or count on being able to hide his food really, really well. Maybe he could cut it both ways?*

*He turns to Damian,* I know I was kind of a jerk earlier, and I'm sorry, but can you teach me this?

[damian rolls his eyes. if danny thinks he was being a jerk damian isn't going to bother to correct him, but damian's gotten worse from family. danny being a stubborn idiot didn't even phase him.]

I wouldn't have mentioned it if I wasn't. I can look into the possibility of antidotes for some of them too.

*You don't have to teach someone how to use an antidote.* That'd be great if you did.

Uh--do you need any help doing that?

[raising an eyebrow.] With the antidotes? Didn't you just say you didn't know anything about chemistry?

I don't. Why--are you making them or finding them?

I don't know how common premade antidotes are going to be in a place like this.

Right. I guess it's not like we can just walk up to our local Box 7-11 and grab a whole set off the shelves, huh...

Maybe I won't find any antidotes off the shelves, but I might find materials. Whatever you need.

*His end of the conversation has lost some of its momentum, and he's not sure what to say next. Damian promised him he'd help teach him stuff. Danny's all but promised he's not saying anything more, and he doesn't want to, not when nothing about the threat itself has changed. He stares at his shoes for a moment, scratching the back of his neck. *

... Um. Anyway, so. Uh. I'd... Better get going...

[damian's lip quirks slightly upward in one corner in amusement at danny's awkwardness before inclining his head "graciously" in danny's direction.]
